3 Tips For Picking The Best Pet Food For Your Dog

When you have a pet, you want to be sure that you’re giving him or her the best possible treatment. From keeping them groomed to giving them enough exercise and ensuring that they’re eating the best food, a lot of time and effort can go into taking proper care of your pet. Wholehearted love deserves protection. Bivvy is pet insurance done right and at an affordable price. So if you have a dog that you’re wanting to treat like a member of the family, here are three tips to make it easier for you to pick the best possible dog food to feed him.

Consult A Vet Before Making Food On Your Own

For many people, getting dog food from a store doesn’t seem to always be the best option. In situations like this, you might consider making some of your pet’s food on your own. However, a lot more goes into making healthy pet food than you might realize.

According to Julio Lopez, a contributor to Everyday Health, it’s best to run any recipes you’re considering by your vet first to ensure that you’re not giving your dog too much or too little of anything they need. For example, while your dog can benefit from eating omega-3 fatty acids, having the wrong level of certain vitamins or minerals can be harmful to your dog. So before you feed your dog anything other than a recommended brand of dog food, make sure you get the green light from your pet’s vet first.

Read The Label For Fillers

When you’re buying your dog pet food, you should start looking at the ingredients on the label just like you would with the food you buy for yourself.

As you examine this label, Jenna Stregowski, a contributor to The Spruce Pets, shares that you should try to pick a brand of pet food that has meat or a meat-based product as at least one of the first three ingredients. Additionally, if you see a lot of chemicals, preservatives, or fillers like soy, corn, or wheat, you might want to try to find a different brand that’s going to give your dog more of what he needs and less of what he doesn’t.

Research The Brand

Along with reading the ingredients of any brand of dog food you’re thinking about feeding your pet, Vladimir Negron, a contributor to PetMD.com, suggests that you also do some research about the brand of dog food that you’re looking at so that you can learn more about how they source their product and the process they go through in making it. For some brands, this information can be found on their website. But if it’s not easily accessible here, you can always call the brand and speak to a consumer representative to get your questions answered.

If you’re wanting to make sure that you get the best dog food for your pet, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you learn how to make this task easier on you.
