How to design your terrace

An outdoor terrace is the perfect place to relax and hang out with the family. You could grow a mini vegetable garden, work outside or sunbathe on a summer’s weekend. There are numerous ways to decorate and utilise your outdoor terrace. However, you need to put in a little time and effort to maintain your terrace. Just like you would clean your bedroom or do the dishes, you need to give your outdoor space some care and attention.

If you are looking to renovate your terrace, here are a few design ideas.

The view

If you have a fantastic view from the terrace, you need to make the most out of it. Make sure the view is the centre point of the layout. Your furniture should be directed towards the view so you can sit back and relax while watching the city go by.

Unfortunately, not everyone has a view from their terrace, and many of us are overlooked by neighbours. You could add plants and greenery to shield your terrace from nosey neighbours. Add a few hanging plants above and a large peace lily to give yourself some privacy.

Choose the right furniture

You don’t have to go for outdoor furniture if your terrace is covered. Many high rise buildings have covered balconies so that you can have rugs and cushions out there. Find a small bistro set that won’t take up too much space on the terrace. Add a few floor cushions as well, so you have somewhere to relax and read your book from time to time.

Or, if you prefer a cosy set up – you could bring a sofa onto the terrace with plenty of blankets. You can snuggle up with a hot chocolate and enjoy a winter’s evening outside.

Enhance the ground

You can make your terrace a room in its right – especially if it’s covered over. Add tiling to the floor and paint the walls to make it feel more like an interior space. You could even hang curtains over the outdoor part to keep it warm through the winter. Just remember that the rain and snow may be cast inwards from time to time. Your materials should be hard-wearing and fairly water-resistant.

Refine the decoration

It’s time for the fun part. Decorate your terrace with fairy lights, plants and ornaments. You could hang artwork on the walls and have a cosy rug on the ground. The decoration will determine the mood of the space. You could make it romantic with candles and throws – or turn it into a workout space with mats and gym equipment.

Make your outdoor space fit your lifestyle – whether you want a reading nook or entertaining zone.
