How to Fix Common Garage Door Problems

What’s the worst the can happen to a garage door?

If you’re asking this, you’re likely a first-time homeowner or you’re a rookie when it comes to garage doors. Well, most of the time, we don’t think about our garage door until something goes wrong. And then, finding the money to pay for the repairs is a challenge in itself!

Even minor garage door issues can turn into big issues before you know it. That’s why it’s important to get to the root cause and fix it sooner rather than later. Even better if you can do it yourself!

Here are five common garage door problems and easy fixes for each.

1. Door Sticking to One Side

One of the most straightforward problems to fix is when your broken garage door is sticking to one side. It means your spring mechanism, which helps push and pull the door up and down, isn’t functioning as it should.

The first step would be to add lubrication to the springs. Use a drum-type grease if you have an older model garage door opener with springs, or use a silicone spray if you have an electric opener.

Check that the tracks your door slides along are free of debris as well – this can often be the cause of imbalanced movement.

2. Door Making Noises While Opening and Closing

If you hear a lot of noise when your door opens or closes, there’s a chance that the rollers or tracks for the garage door are suffering from wear and tear.

A screeching noise could mean one of the springs is starting to come loose and rub against another part of your garage door.

It’s best to hire someone for this situation. It can lead to more significant issues quickly, and the tracks could need replacing.

3. Door Not Opening All The Way

If the door isn’t opening all the way, there is likely an issue with the garage door’s spring mechanism or other parts. In time, these components may break down and fail completely.

The best way to fix this problem is to call in a garage maintenance expert to make repairs. That way, you’ll have peace of mind knowing the job is done to the highest standard.

4. Door Not Opening or Closing At All

A stuck door is much more severe and usually requires a professional to fix, especially if the door is heavy. Several factors can cause garage door opener problems, from small to major ones.

The most common cause is that the springs are not aligned. To fix it, tighten or loosen the spring tensioner equalizer accordingly.

If you aren’t confident doing the work yourself, Always call a professional for help if you feel uncomfortable dealing with this problem on your own.

5. Intermittent Signal

If your garage door remote is randomly not working, the battery could be dead. Replacing a battery in a device such as a Marantec Garage Door Keypad is relatively simple. Alternatively, if the device is new, the installer may not have set the garage door opener’s frequency to the same as your remote.

First, check your garage door opener’s frequency – it should match what is programmed onto your remote. If it does not, you’ll need to push a button on the garage door opener to reset its frequency.

Sometimes, especially on older doors, this can be caused by a faulty receiver in the garage door – and that will require replacing.

Hire a Professional for Most Common Garage Door Problems

While the above tips are pretty simple, it’s always best to call in a professional if you find any issues with your garage door.

Even the most common garage maintenance can be dangerous to work on by yourself, and you could end up hurting yourself in the process without realizing it. Therefore it’s essential to troubleshoot problems as soon as they arise – before they get worse and potentially more expensive to fix.
