Tips for Adding Some Architectural Character to Your Home

A picture containing chair, wooden, table, indoor Description automatically generated Are you looking for some ways to take your home from merely nice to remarkable and memorable in 2022? If so, there are many ways you can go about this, such as renovating and buying new furniture, choosing more awe-inspiring art and other pieces, or finding ways to re-style your items, so they bring a fresh new life to the property.

Another way you might revamp your place is by adding some architectural character to the house if it doesn’t currently have much in this way.

Add Moldings and Other Ceiling Embellishments

One of the best and most obvious ways to bring more visual appeal to your home is to look up and consider how to make ceilings more interesting. Moldings are a popular choice. They can be placed in numerous spots, and they help give more of a sense of depth to different spaces. You can install them on the ceiling to mimic historical details and lift the room, adding an illusion of length and height.

Other ways to aim higher include adding trim work to high ceilings or creating a coffered ceiling. You might also put in some ceiling beams made from hand-hewn barn beams or other wood that will give a rustic and warm touch to your home. Such beams are particularly suitable for rooms with high ceilings.

Also, it often pays to buy some modern ceiling fans that can further add a positive impact to a room. Choose unique, structurally intriguing products that match the other architectural details you put in, and you’ll soon see the space brimming even more with character.

Use Baseboards

Another idea is to look down and pay attention to baseboards throughout your home. You might replace or enhance what’s already there or add such features in altogether. Baseboards act similarly to crown moldings, but instead of hiding areas where walls meet ceilings, they hide joints where walls meet floors. Baseboards also protect plaster walls from scuffs and other damage, making them even handier than just for the visual link they provide around every room.

Panel the Walls

You might like to add some architectural character to the walls of your abode, too. If you currently have unadorned walls in your place, look at them as a blank canvas for you to dress up. You could, for example, create a wow-factor by installing wainscoting, which is available in numerous patterns. Beaded boards give a home a cottage look and feel, which may work for you, too.

Create a Window Seat

Anyone who enjoys curling up with a good book when they get the chance is sure to appreciate both the look and the practical advantages of creating a window seat in one or more rooms of the home. Such architectural details give you extra storage, too, and can be a place to store books or appealingly display mementos.

Make Entranceways Eye-Catching

Most of us don’t pay much mind to the doorways we walk through in properties, but this doesn’t mean such areas can’t be utilized to bring more class and charm to a home. Bring some extra style to doorways by adding trim work to them, for instance. Detailed trim draws the eye for all the right reasons and is suitable for straight doorways and arched ones.

Replace Window Trims

Similarly, you might consider replacing current window trims with more exciting options or adding them all together. The molding will give you a handcrafted look and allows you to dress up even the most modern or boring-seeming window to make it look quaint and historic. Interior window trims help finish off the look of rooms and add a décor element that frames a pretty view or outlook.

Switch Out Windows and Doors

Today, you don’t have to look far to find windows and doors in various shapes, colors, and styles. For instance, you might enjoy the look of sliding barn doors inside your home rather than traditional hinged ones or even curved windows or stained-glass ones.

At first, it might seem that you’d have to invest a considerable amount of time and money into adding architectural elements to a property. However, it’s often easier and cheaper to do this work than expected.

Keep an eye out for garage sale finds or occasions where people renovate older properties and get rid of things you can utilize. Watch online tutorials for tips and check out blogs and social media pages for architectural inspiration, too.
