Why you should add a loft conversion to your next home improvement plan

If you are looking to carry out any home improvement work, whether to simply unlock increased functionality from your property or increase its appeal to potential homebuyers as well, there are various options open to you. Those include adding a porch, conservatory or garden room.

However, you could especially benefit from opting for a loft conversion. This kind of project can free up more space in what could currently be a rather underutilised part of your home. Here are a few other reasons for you to seriously consider a loft conversion.

Many loft conversions don’t require planning permission

In the UK, many loft conversion projects can proceed without any need for planning permission to be secured first.

A number of planning rules pertaining to loft conversions in the UK are outlined by Property Investor Today, which says that most of these conversions are allowed under what are known as permitted development rights.

However, if your loft conversion project will exceed the regulations enshrined by these rights, you will indeed have to apply for planning permission.

You can increase your property’s value

According to a Halifax study mentioned by YourMoney.com last year, an attic conversion generates a stronger return on investment (ROI) than any other home improvement project. On average, this type of conversion will add £11,020 to the property’s price, according to the research.

The same study revealed that new bathrooms and kitchens are the most popular home improvements – and just guess where extra rooms like these could go in the house…

There are many different types of loft conversion

Why exactly are you considering converting your loft in the first place? The answer gets to the heart of what you should include in your loft – and you should take note that the type of loft conversion chosen will affect how much added value it could bring to your property.

Adding a double bedroom with an en-suite, for example, can increase your property’s value by over 20%, while other lucrative options include fitting out a home office or a playroom.

A loft conversion can make your home stand out

Despite the documented value that a loft conversion can add to a property, it’s not necessarily the most popular home upgrade – with new boilers, window replacements and roof repairs all explicitly ranking higher in popularity in at least the previously-mentioned Halifax study.

Therefore, a home where the loft has been converted can be particularly easily distinguished from other homes in a fiercely competitive property market.

Converting a loft can be easier than you might think

Getting a loft converted is a big step, but not necessarily a difficult one. You can strip a lot of friction out of the equation of creating a loft conversion when you arrange for a seasoned professional to do much of the heavy-duty work for you.

If you live in any of the Midlands or Southern areas of England, for example, Instaloft provides a great loft boarding service where the boarding is fitted to the loft’s exact specifications.
